This runs on FiiO's now proven system of Android 13 operating system on a Snapdragon 680 CPU, but with RAM upgraded to 8GB (like the M27) & 128GB of built in storage, perfect for a huge array of apps and even a decent amount of music file storage. For large music collections, use a micro SD card up to 2 TB.
M33 is right in the sweet spot of size for a higher end DAP. It is easy to use with a large Gen3 Gorilla Glass 5.5" screen, super detailed at 1080 x 2160 res, so your streaming apps will all look fantastic. Yet its still portable with a weight similar to a large phone, at 258g, making is easy to carry with you wherever you go, commute or travel to.
Use the M33 as a usb dac with your computer for no-latency audio, thanks to its up to the minute XMOS XU316 usb interface.
That FiiO R2R DAC Inside
The star of this show is the DAC for sure. FiiO's desktop R2R DACs have become uber popular and this is FiiO's first application of this DAC in a portable DAP. The smooth, warm tone of the DAC is absolutely present, balanced out with a linear, high resolution design. There are two settings to choose, Flat and Warm, to use the tuning that you prefer and best matches your headphones and IEM's.
Seriously Great Hardware Inside
The M33 has the goods, with TI Burr Brown amp components, massive caps for energy storage and high current Mosfets, the parts are top quality. The build is also spectacular at this price range. Below you can see the DAC, processer and AMP sections each have extensive shielding to isolate noise and possible distortion from the processor. All this has been done to protect the signal and provide the best possible soundstage - all to enhance your listening experience.
Fun Software you will Want to Use
There are interesting, fun perks all around this DAP since the mature, developed software from the M21 and M27 has been used here. There have been and will continue to be regular updates, upgrades and features that get tweaks. Choose from a variety of VU-Meters to have going during playback, or the cool cassette deck graphics that fit into the fun retro theme.
There is even a spectrum analyzer option and Christmas themed UI options - fun perks that make it a pleasure to use and that are tough to find in most other brands.

Tweak the 10 band Parametric EQ to your hearts content, or engage the 'Auto EQ' based on your headphone model - and let it do the work for you. M33 R2R has Desktop Mode
As seen in the photo below, there is a micro SD card slot, usb slot and a second power input, for FiiO's now famous Desktop Mode feature. When connected to a PD charger or battery back up, you can enable Desktop Mode, which will both:
- bypass the built in battery, putting less wear on the battery
- allows for a higher output from headphones.
When using most planar models like Audeze, Hifiman or Dan Clark Audio, or higher impedance full size headphones like HD600, HD650, DT1990, DT880, use this Desktop Mode to access higher headphone output for improved sound quality. It allows the M33 R2R to perform more like a home amp and surpass the power supply limitations inherent in portable devices.
Battery life is up to 15.5 hours with a 3.5mm headphone output and charge time is improving every generation. You can use a 30 watt phone charger and go from 0-100% charge in approx 1.5 hours - such an improvement from previous models a few years ago.
